The Right Time to Start is Earlier Than You Think. Get your Orthodontic Evaluation by the Age of 7
Many parents assume orthodontic treatment is something to think about once all of a child's permanent teeth have come in. In reality, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, enough permanent teeth have erupted, and enough jaw development has occurred for our team to identify emerging concerns and monitor growth patterns before problems become more complex or difficult to correct. Early evaluation does not always mean early treatment, but it ensures that if intervention is needed, we can act at exactly the right time.
Schedule Your Child's Orthodontic Evaluation
Orthodontic Observation
Orthodontic observation typically begins around age 7 or 8 and consists of routine monitoring visits every six months to one year. During these visits, our team watches closely as your child's jaw develops to determine whether and when early orthodontic treatment may be necessary. We look for issues such as crowding, spacing, bite irregularities, and jaw growth patterns that may benefit from early intervention. These observation visits are low-pressure and informational, giving us the data we need to act with precision and confidence when the time is right.
Phase 1 Early Orthodontic Treatment
Phase 1 treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, takes place while your child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This early phase of treatment is not about achieving a perfect smile right away. It is about creating the best possible foundation for your child's developing bite and jaw so that future treatment is more effective and, in many cases, less extensive.
Phase 1 treatment can:
- Modify or guide your child's growth patterns to encourage proper jaw and bite development
- Intercept developmental problems and help prevent permanent teeth from becoming impacted
- Guide permanent teeth into a better, more favorable position as they erupt
- Improve long-term orthodontic outcomes and potentially shorten the duration of future full treatment
- Correct harmful oral habits, such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, that can affect bite development
Orthodontic Maintenance
Following Phase 1 treatment, your child will return for routine orthodontic maintenance visits one to two times per year. During these visits, our team assesses your child's ongoing development and determines their readiness for future full braces when the time comes. These visits keep us closely connected to your child's progress and allow us to plan the next phase of treatment with confidence and precision.
Appliances Used in Early Interceptive Orthodontics
Depending on your child's specific needs, our team may recommend one or more of the following orthodontic appliances as part of their early treatment plan:
- Partial Braces: Placed on select teeth to begin guiding alignment before all permanent teeth have erupted
- Retainers: Custom devices that hold teeth in their corrected positions and support healthy development
- Palatal Expanders: Widen the upper jaw to create space for incoming permanent teeth and improve bite alignment
- Space Maintainers: Hold space open after an early tooth loss to ensure permanent teeth erupt in the correct position
- Thumb Appliances: Help discourage thumb sucking habits that can affect the developing bite and jaw structure
- Functional or Growth Modification Appliances: Guide jaw growth and correct bite discrepancies during critical developmental windows
